We are pleased to inform you Catch-All Math colloquium in April.

This semester, we are organizing colloquiums in April, May, June, and July
as follows:



*Wednesday, April 12, 15:00-17:00, Laura Escobar (Washington University in
St. Lous)*

*Short bio:* I grew up in Bogotá, Colombia and did my undergraduate studies
in mathematics at Universidad de los Andes. Afterwards, I moved to the
United States for my graduate studies and have lived there since.

*Title of the first talk: Measuring polytopes *

*Abstract of the first talk:* This will be an expository talk aimed at a
broad audience, including advanced undergraduate students. Generalizing
polygons, a polytope is the smallest convex set containing a finite set of
points. There are many ways to measure a polytope: volume, number of
vertices, number of lattice points inside the polytope, etc. A wide variety
of problems in pure and applied mathematics can be addressed by measuring a
polytope. However, doing so can be very complex: there is no procedure that
can efficiently measure any polytope. In this talk, we will discuss these
problems for families of polytopes which, due to their symmetries, are of
special interest. In the case of the volume of a polytope, we will discuss
how the interplay between algebraic geometry and combinatorics sheds light
on this problem.

*Title of the second talk: Supporting students by building communities*

*Abstract of the second talk:* A Mathematician, like any human, requires a
sense of community to thrive. However, many underrepresented students face
challenges in achieving this sense of belonging. To address this issue,
various DEI initiatives in the US and Colombia aim to facilitate the
creation of communities that support diversity. In this session, I would
like to provide insight into the importance of community building and some
of these initiatives.

略歴：私はコロンビアのボゴタで生まれ育ちました．学部はロス・アンデス大学です．その後アメリカで大学院生活を送り現在に至ります．


題目1：Measuring polytopes（多面体を測る）

アブストラクト：これは学部上級生を含む幅広い聴衆を対象とした解説的な講演です。多角形を一般化した多面体は有限個の点を含む最小の凸集合です。
多面体を測る方法はたくさんあります．体積、頂点の数、多面体内部の格子点の数等々。多面体を測ることで、純粋数学および応用数学のさまざまな問題に対処できます。
ただし、それは非常に複雑になり得ます。多面体を効率的に測る手順はありません。この講演では、対称性をもつことで特に興味深い多面体族に関する問題を扱います。
多面体の体積の場合、代数幾何学と組み合わせ論の相互作用が，問題にどのように光を当てるかを議論します．


題目２：Supporting students by building communities（コミュニティづくりによる学生支援）

アブストラクト：数学者は他の人々と同様、成功するにはコミュニティ感覚が必要です。しかし、あまり取り上げられることのない学生（あるいは少数派の学生）の多くは、この帰属意識をもつことに困難を抱えています。

この問題に取り組むために、米国とコロンビアでは、多様性を支えるコミュニティづくりを円滑に行うことを目指して、さまざまなDEIの取り組みが行われています。

このセッションでは、コミュニティづくりの重要性とそのいくつかの取り組みに関する知見を紹介したいと思います。

数学の部は、非専門家を対象とした数学の講演です。
議論の部は、講演者のこれまでの数学者としての道のりなどに関するお話を聞いた後に、
少人数に分かれて、DEI（Diversity, Equity, Inclusion）などに関する意見交換をします。
議論の部が情報共有、ネットワーク構築、交流促進などにもつながることを期待しています。

講演者には，大学院生を含む幅広い聴衆に向けた講演をお願いしていますので，周囲の大学院生にも参加をお勧めいただけると幸いです。
