Dear Colleague,

It is my sad duty to inform you that Professor Shiing-shen Chern, the
Honorary Director of the Nankai Institute of Mathematics, passed away on
December 3, 2004 at 19:14, in Tianjin.

A memorial Service has been scheduled on December 12, 2004, starting from
9:00am, and Nankai University will have the formal announcement soon.
